1. When is an electrical permit NOT required?

It is not required for minor repair work, including the replacement of lamps or the connection of approved portable electrical equipment to approved permanently installed receptacles per the current International Residential Code section R105.2 Work exempt from permit

2. Can I, as a homeowner, install my own wiring and/or electrical equipment?

No, per our local code amendment the homeowner is not allowed to install any permanent wiring or electrical equipment. Only a State licensed Electrical contractor registered in Edmond or their licensed representative is allowed to do this. The only exception to this is the replacement of receptacles,the box supporting the fixture, light switches or similar light fixtures where it does not include replacement or addition of wiring.

3. Is my contractor required to bring all of the wiring and electrical equipment on a residential system brought up to current code when I remodel my residence?

No, only the area where the remodeling is taking place. Such as, where adding new walls or ceilings, moving walls or ceilings and similar situations. Then the wiring and electrical equipment in these areas needs to meet the current code language. However, if you are converting your residence to a commercial property, it is required to be brought up to commercial standards.

4. Does all of the wiring and electrical equipment need to be replaced on a residential fire restoration to meet the current code?

No, only the areas affected by the fire need to be replaced unless there is existing wiring that would be considered unsafe by the Building Inspector.

5. Who is responsible for the installation of vent duct on a bathroom exhaust fan?

Typically the electrical contractor or their representative installs the housing and wiring for the bathroom exhaust fan. The vent duct installation actually falls under the mechanical code and is required by the state adopted code to be installed by a mechanical contractor.
