With the arrival of the growing season, we have some great opportunities available for Edmond residents to get involved in. Please see below for information about this spring's events.
***This event is past*** We have set the date for our last tree distribution of the season, to be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Bickham-Rudkin Park (at E 33rd St and Rankin Terrace, near the dog park). The event will begin at 5:30 PM so people can make it by after work, and we will give out a little over 200 trees until 7:30 PM (or a little earlier, if we run out before that time).
Available species include sawtooth oak, limited numbers of Castle Green oak, goldenrain tree, pond cypress and fringe tree, and very limited numbers of red bud and chinquapin oak. Trees are available on a first come, first served basis, one per household. Since the City of Edmond has begun purchasing the trees for these distributions rather than mainly receiving donated trees, we must limit recipients to residents within Edmond City Limits. To find out if you are an Edmond resident, check out this online tool. Please bring an Edmond utility bill to verify residency when picking up a tree. The next tree distribution event will not take place until this fall.

***This event is past*** A few years ago, a unique weeping Japanese pagoda tree was transplanted, along with its 13 foot diameter root ball to the Margaret Annis Boys Centennial Arboretum in Bickham-Rudkin Park. A large mulched area beneath the canopy of this special tree helps to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature and add minerals back to the soil to be absorbed by the tree’s roots. Join us on the evening of Tuesday April 21, 2015 at 6 PM to replenish this large mulched area and expand it to accommodate the growing spread of the tree’s drip line. It is recommended that volunteers wear closed-toed shoes and bring work gloves.
Mulching the Weeping Japanese Pagoda Tree
***This event is past*** A few years ago, a unique weeping Japanese pagoda tree was transplanted, along with its 13 foot diameter root ball to the Margaret Annis Boys Centennial Arboretum in Bickham-Rudkin Park. A large mulched area beneath the canopy of this special tree helps to conserve soil moisture, regulate soil temperature and add minerals back to the soil to be absorbed by the tree’s roots. Join us on the evening of Tuesday April 21, 2015 at 6 PM to replenish this large mulched area and expand it to accommodate the growing spread of the tree’s drip line. It is recommended that volunteers wear closed-toed shoes and bring work gloves.
Schedule a Volunteer Event
Urban Forestry has additional volunteer opportunities available including mulching mature trees/planting trees in a public area. If your group is interested in volunteering for one of these projects, we would be happy to schedule a date that works for you. Contact us to discuss a potential opportunity; otherwise, keep an eye out for the date of an upcoming volunteer event!
