Upcoming Events

Happy New Year, from the Urban Forestry Department! We are looking forward to serving Edmond residents in 2015 through our programs and services. We still have a lot to plan on this year’s events, but please see below for some important dates and opportunities to get involved in.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Each year, Edmond residents are encouraged to drop off their real Christmas trees to be chipped into mulch that will then be made available to residents for use in their yards. Edmond Solid Waste Services asks that all decorations, stands and nails be removed from the trees. This year’s drop off locations include Hafer Park and Mitch Park, and the deadline for drop off is Friday, January 9th. Mulch will be ready to pick up at Mitch Park after February 6th. View the Christmas Tree Recycling page for more information.

Arbor Day Art Contest Deadline

In the Fall edition of Edmond Tree Mail, we announced the expansion of the Arbor Day Art Contest to include fifth graders from private and home schools in Edmond for the first time. Arbor Week is just around the corner, and the deadline for entries into the contest is quickly approaching as well. If your school would like to participate in this longstanding tradition of the Arbor Week celebration, register and download the contest rules from the Arbor Day Art Contest page. All artwork entries must be received by no later than 5 PM on Wednesday, February 4th, 2015.

Winter Tree Distribution

If you missed one of the recent tree distributions, don’t worry—Urban Forestry will be hosting another event in late winter. The date is not set for the distribution, but be sure to keep up with our Facebook page to find out as soon as we announce it!

Arbor Week

This week long celebration of trees and the enormous benefits they provide will take place during the week of March 22nd – 28th this year. Stay tuned for announcements about community tree planting events, the Arbor Day Art Show and more exciting additions to this year’s celebration.

Volunteer Event

Urban Forestry has a couple of volunteer opportunities available including a seedling planting and mulching mature trees/planting trees in a public area. Dates have not yet been set for these events, but we are tentatively planning for late February or early March. If your group is interested in volunteering for one of these projects, we would be happy to schedule a date that works for you. Contact us to discuss a potential opportunity; otherwise, keep an eye out for the date of an upcoming volunteer event!

Sometimes, events and other important dates are scheduled in between distributions of this newsletter and are thus not included in the upcoming events listed here.
