What is FOG?

FOG stands for Fats, Oils and Grease.

Why is FOG a Problem?

Fats, Oil and grease eventually become solid rather than liquid and the grease will stick to the sides of sewer pipes and clog them. That can cause a back up and overflow in your home, or into the streets and streams.

The City of Edmond's FOG program helps homeowners to properly dispose of fats, oils and grease. Here are a few simple tips that will help you avoid a sewer back-up in your home. Not only is a sewer back-up unpleasant and unsanitary, the clean up can cost thousands of dollars and your homeowner's insurance may not cover the cost.

Tips to avoid a sewer back-up


  • Pour all bacon, fried chicken and other cooling grease into a can, place the can in your freezer, when the grease is frozen, toss the can into the trash.
  • Scape fats, grease and food from plates and cooking utensils into the trash.
  • Use basket strainers in your sinks to catch food and empty into the trash.
Fats, oils and grease are bad for your plumbing system. When you pour these down the sink drain or toilet, they can cause grease clogs. The good news is, grease clogs are easy to prevent if you follow these simple tips.
