The Story of Arbor Day

In 1872, a man by the name of J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees. This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than one million trees in Nebraska, and is now celebrated all over the world.

While most states celebrate only one day of Arbor festivities, Oklahoma celebrates a full week! This is the time when we come together to appreciate the value trees provide to our community and to learn more about how to keep them thriving here… furthermore, it’s the perfect time to plant new trees throughout the city –at home and in public places.

We hope you will join us for some of our events this year, which you can find out about in the other segments of this newsletter. If you are interested in learning more about the history of Arbor Day, you can read up on it through the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Interactive History Book.

Happy Arbor Week!
